Today at Noon, the United States Mint issued a press release with some shocking and disappointing news. The collectible 2009 Proof and Uncirculated Gold and Silver Eagles will not be offered this year. As partial consolation, the press release also announced plans to offer the 2009 Proof Gold Buffalo, the 2009 Proof Platinum Eagle, and fractional weight Gold Eagle bullion coins.

This straight from the mint site:

"As a result of the recent numismatic product portfolio analysis, fractional sizes of American Eagle Platinum Proof Coins will no longer be produced.

Additionally, the United States Mint will no longer produce American Eagle Platinum Uncirculated Coins."

Does that make these "numi" coins now?

They do have some really nice high relief 1 oz. 24 carat double eagle gold coins there now and the price isn't even that ridiculous either.

ummm what? if they are claiming to have 24kt Gold Eagles I would be very suspicious...

The American Gold eagle bullion coins were first released in 1986. The Roman numeral date changed every year up until the early nineties, when it became Arabic. it is my understanding that the Buffalo was the first US Gold Coin in 24kt...

link for the new 24 carat high relief double eagle I mentioned. Looks like the price went up already
Note this is a DOUBLE EAGLE based on the 1907 coin, legal tender value $20 but it is one OZ 24 carat and it comes with a book and a pretty box for $1439
It is new for 2009 directly from the mint.
